Mason Greenwood has enjoyed a solid season with Olympique de Marseille, scoring 15 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches. Despite these performances, the English striker did not always convince everyone within the club.
Medhi Benatia even considered parting ways with Greenwood. According to La Provence, the club’s football director came close to pushing the forward toward the exit last summer. The former Juventus defender reportedly criticized Greenwood for a lack of defensive effort, an issue that regularly came up during discussions between the two.
Greenwood’s Strong Finish Changes Marseille’s Plans
By the end of 2024, when the former Manchester United player was going through a more difficult spell, Benatia was even thinking about placing him on the market during the summer transfer window in 2025.
However, the situation ultimately shifted thanks to Greenwood’s impressive end to the season. The English forward scored six goals in the final eight Ligue 1 matchdays, playing a major role in Marseille securing qualification for the Champions League and reestablishing himself as a key figure in the squad.
