José Mourinho has paid a deeply emotional tribute to Jorge Costa, the former Portuguese international and legendary FC Porto defender, who passed away in the last few hours.
The sudden death of Costa — his former captain during FC Porto’s 2004 Champions League triumph — has sent shockwaves through the football world. Speaking during a press conference with Fenerbahçe, Mourinho fought back tears as he honoured his old friend.
“You have captains, and then you have leaders. Jorge was one of those who did the dirty work so the coach could do his,” Mourinho said, visibly moved.
“I’ll cry later”
Showing the mental resilience that defined both their careers, Mourinho added: “If he were here, he’d tell me: ‘Do your press conference, coach. Play tomorrow, win. Forget about me.’ So that’s what I’ll try to do. And I’ll cry after.”
A heartbreaking tribute, underlining the special bond between two icons of Portuguese football — united forever by memories, silverware, and mutual respect.
