World Cup: Mbappé chasing Messi

Kylian Mbappé continues to write his legend at the World Cup. Scoring a brace against Sweden (3-0) this Tuesday in the Round of 16, the France captain now has 18 goals in World Cup history.

Eighteen World Cup goals is incredible. And it’s Mbappé. He’s on a mission—he wants that World Cup. A monumental total that allows him to surpass Miroslav Klose, long considered the competition’s ultimate reference.

The German, stuck at 16 goals, has now been overtaken by Mbappé. Ahead of the Frenchman, only Lionel Messi remains, leading the rankings with 19 goals.

But the Real Madrid player refuses to make this record an obsession. “Do I have this record in mind? No, no, no. The goal is to go as far as possible with the team and come back here on July 19,” Mbappé explained in the mixed zone.

The French striker knows he is getting very close to the top. “Obviously, the more goals I score, the higher I climb in the rankings. I’m sure Leo will score more goals, but I don’t focus on that,” he added.

For Mbappé, the priority remains collective. “I focus more on our opponents and what comes next in the competition. I want to make my country’s history and make people proud,” insisted the French captain.

After surpassing Klose, Mbappé is now just one goal behind Messi. But in his mind, only one thing truly matters: continuing to help Les Bleus win and taking France as far as possible in this World Cup.
