Zinédine Zidane has revisited one of the most unforgettable moments of the 2006 World Cup final: his famous panenka against Gianluigi Buffon.

Zidane looked back at his audacious penalty against Buffon in 2006, an image that shocked the entire world. Zizou scored the opening goal of the World Cup final with the bold gesture, sending a softly chipped ball that barely crossed the goal line.

Why Zidane Chose a Panenka Against Buffon

Accustomed to taking his penalties from right to left, he knew Buffon would expect that shot. “He dives to the right straight away in the final. I told myself I had to innovate, to invent something against him.” The French legend fully stood by his decision. “If I miss, it’s not a big deal because there was still time left. I like what I did,” he concluded.
