Marc Guéhi, Manchester City’s smart signing

Manchester City have confirmed a major defensive reinforcement with the signing of Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old England international has agreed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Citizens, running until the summer of 2031.

Guéhi becomes the club’s second addition of the winter transfer window after the arrival of winger Antoine Semenyo. Regarded as one of the Premier League’s best young centre-backs, he comes to the Etihad with strong top-level experience, having made 188 appearances for Palace in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists. He has also earned 26 caps for England, where he has established himself as an important member of the squad.

A prestigious move and a proud moment

To secure him from Crystal Palace with less than six months left on his contract, City still had to pay around €23 million, the same fee Palace paid Chelsea for him in the summer of 2021. In his first comments, Guéhi did not hide his pride, saying that joining City is “the culmination of all the work” he has put into his career and that he is arriving at “the best club in England, with an incredible squad.” He says he is eager to work with his new teammates, understand the staff’s demands and show the supporters what he can do.

Director of football Hugo Viana was equally enthusiastic, stating that Guéhi “has been one of the best defenders in English football for some time,” praising his defensive qualities, game intelligence, leadership and constant desire to improve. At 25, the player is, in his view, entering the best years of his career, and Manchester City have secured a proven defender who is still progressing and expected to become a key part of the squad in the years to come.
