Long considered one of Real Madrid’s top priorities to strengthen the defense this summer, Nico Schlotterbeck could ultimately remain at Borussia Dortmund. The Spanish club has reportedly cooled its interest in the German international in recent days.
According to AS, Real Madrid’s management still appreciates Schlotterbeck’s profile, but his recent ankle injury has raised serious concerns. The situation could jeopardize a move that had been under consideration for several weeks.
Schlotterbeck’s Injury Changes Real Madrid’s Plans
The timing could hardly be worse for the 26-year-old defender. While his €50 million release clause expires at the end of July, an estimated two-month absence has significantly complicated Real Madrid’s plans.
Already ruled out of the 2026 World Cup because of the injury, Schlotterbeck may also see a unique opportunity to join Los Blancos slip away. The Spanish giants are reluctant to take any physical risks on such a major investment.
With only a few weeks left before the favorable release clause expires, the player’s future appears more uncertain than ever. Borussia Dortmund now has a strong chance of keeping its defensive leader for at least one more season.
