We didn’t know it until now, but Yaya Touré almost joined Paris SaintGermain. Invited on Zack Nani’s show, the Ivorian lifted the veil on an episode long kept in the shadows: his almosttransfer to the French capital.
Yaya Touré: PSG missed a masterstroke over a technical detail.
The midfielder explains that before taking off in Europe, Paris was his absolute priority. “I didn’t want to go to Ukraine. For me, Paris SaintGermain or another club in France was the top. Going to PSG was taken away from me. I know the details: PSG wanted to pay in two instalments, the Ukrainian club wanted cash,” he said.
A simple financial disagreement that changed everything. Denied Ligue 1, Touré eventually left for Metalurh Donetsk in 2003 — a discreet but decisive step that became the first springboard to an exceptional career.
A brilliant career… far from the Parc
After Donetsk, Touré joined AS Monaco, then established himself at FC Barcelona, where he lifted the Champions League in 2009. What followed sealed his legacy: at Manchester City, he became one of the engines of the club, a fourtime Premier League champion and an emblematic figure of the City project.
Naturally, the idea of Yaya Touré at the Parc des Princes leaves a lingering sense of regret. Would he have changed the destiny of PSG in the 2000s? Would the Parisian club have found in him the dominant midfielder it lacked? Impossible to know.
What is certain, however, is that Paris came very close to landing one of the greatest forces in modern football.
