The Julian Alvarez saga is turning into a full-blown confrontation between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. While the Argentine striker has publicly opened the door to a summer exit, Atletico’s executives have now gone on the offensive.
A move to Barcelona is becoming increasingly complicated. Following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez made his intentions clear. “I spoke with the people at the club. I think a transfer would be the best solution for everyone,” said the World Cup winner, immediately reigniting speculation about a switch to Barcelona.
Atletico Ready to Fight Barcelona
Those comments were not well received in Madrid. According to AS, Atletico officials have absolutely no intention of opening negotiations with their Catalan rivals. The message is crystal clear: if Barcelona want Alvarez, they will have to trigger his €500 million release clause.
But the tension does not stop there. Furious with the situation, Atletico believe Barcelona have already held discussions with the player despite him still being under contract and protected by FIFA regulations.
Atletico CEO Gil Marin has now raised the stakes with a strongly worded statement. “We will file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for negotiating with a player under contract during the protected period,” he declared. A threat that could turn the Alvarez transfer saga into a major legal battle between two of Spain’s biggest clubs.
