Real Madrid attempted a blockbuster move by offering €150 million to sign Argentine striker Julián Álvarez. The bid was immediately rejected by Atlético Madrid, who reminded everyone that the release clause in their star forward’s contract stands at a staggering €500 million.
Real Madrid has become the laughingstock of Spain over this failed pursuit. Julián Álvarez is not coming — not even close. Atlético Madrid has no intention of letting him leave, and the player himself appears equally unwilling. The Rojiblancos even took the opportunity to mock their city rivals on social media, turning the rejection into a public embarrassment for Los Blancos.
Barcelona Emerges as Alvarez’s Preferred Destination
Beyond the rivalry between the two Madrid clubs, the real story concerns Álvarez’s future. According to several Spanish reports, the Argentine international has grown frustrated with coach Diego Simeone, believing Atlético’s defensive style of play is limiting his development and ambitions.
The same reports claim that Álvarez has already reached a preliminary agreement with FC Barcelona regarding a potential transfer valued at around €150 million. However, the Catalan club is said to have offered only €100 million so far, an amount Atlético Madrid quickly rejected.
Journalist José Álvarez further claims that the World Cup winner personally contacted Barcelona’s management after Real Madrid’s approach to reassure the Blaugrana. According to El Chiringuito, the striker allegedly stated: “I have not negotiated with Real Madrid and I have no intention of doing so. I want to play for Barça.” Real Madrid now appears out of the race, leaving Barcelona to find a financial agreement with Atlético if they hope to complete one of the biggest transfers of the summer.
