Didier Deschamps has hit back at criticism surrounding Kylian Mbappé, while Arsène Wenger has predicted an outstanding World Cup for the France captain. The counterattack is underway as two of French football’s biggest figures rally behind the star forward.
Just days before the start of the World Cup, debate continues over Mbappé’s role in the French national team. Asked about his decision to deploy the captain in a central attacking position, Deschamps responded with a touch of sarcasm aimed at his critics.
Wenger Backs Mbappé for a Huge World Cup
The France manager stressed that Mbappé’s position is far from a new experiment. “I must be stupid, and he must have had a lot of stupid coaches then!” Deschamps joked before pointing out that the striker has regularly played through the middle for several years. “He has been playing in a central role for three years, both at Paris Saint-Germain and at Real Madrid,” he insisted.
Despite the criticism Mbappé has faced during parts of the season, Wenger remains extremely confident ahead of the global tournament. “I’m ready to take any bet. He’s going to have a very great World Cup,” said the former Arsenal manager, arguing that many of the attacks directed at the Real Madrid star have been unfair.
Wenger believes the collective struggles at Real Madrid played a major role in Mbappé’s difficulties. “He has been criticized unfairly many times this season. He arrived in an average Real Madrid team. Real have three or four world-class players. They used to have ten,” he said. The former FIFA executive added that football always looks for a scapegoat when results disappoint. “Football is like that. There is always a need for a scapegoat. He became one,” Wenger concluded, convinced that Mbappé will answer his critics on the pitch during the World Cup.
