Tottenham have officially announced the arrival of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, who had been linked with PSG for a while, will therefore continue his career in the Premier League in a transfer that is already making its mark on the English summer window.
Mateus Fernandes joins Tottenham and enters the club’s history books. Spurs confirmed the news in a statement. “We are delighted to announce the signing of Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old Portugal international midfielder joins us from West Ham United,” the London club said, without specifying the length of his contract.
Tottenham Break Their Transfer Record
According to David Ornstein, Tottenham won the race with an offer estimated at around £85 million guaranteed, or more than €90 million. Manchester United were also following the situation, but reportedly did not want to match such a fee.
PSG had also made enquiries about Mateus Fernandes, but that option is now closed. The Parisian club will therefore have to look elsewhere to strengthen its midfield.
For Tottenham, this is a major investment. The transfer even becomes the biggest in the club’s history, ahead of Xavi Simons, who was signed a year earlier from RB Leipzig for €65 million. West Ham, meanwhile, have completed an excellent financial deal after signing Fernandes from Southampton in 2025 for €44 million, following his move to the Saints from Sporting CP for €15 million. Despite suffering two consecutive relegations, with Southampton and then West Ham, Mateus Fernandes has managed to maintain a strong market value. At just 21, the Portuguese international will now try to take the next step with Tottenham.
