Manuel Ugarte’s World Cup ended in a nightmare. Beaten by Spain on Saturday (0-1), Uruguay left the tournament with huge frustration. But for the former PSG midfielder, the worst came after the match.
A terrible injury for Manuel Ugarte, a failed World Cup for Uruguay, and Manchester United left in trouble. Manuel Ugarte has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament. Taken off injured before half-time against La Roja, the 25-year-old Uruguay international is now facing a very long spell on the sidelines.
Manchester United Facing a Major Ugarte Problem
In an official statement, Manchester United confirmed: “Manchester United confirms that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury sustained during Uruguay’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain.” Already eliminated with La Celeste, Ugarte now sees his season take a dramatic turn. The Manchester United player, who previously played for PSG without ever truly convincing, is going through one of the most difficult moments of his career.
This injury also comes at the worst possible time for Manchester United. The English club had hoped to sell Ugarte during the summer transfer window, but this serious setback could completely block the deal. Signed from PSG in the summer of 2024 for around €50 million, plus €10 million in possible bonuses, the Uruguayan midfielder never managed to establish himself at Old Trafford.
Used sparingly this season, with only eight Premier League starts, Ugarte was no longer really part of United’s plans. Manchester United were therefore considering a summer exit, with AC Milan among the interested clubs. That sale was supposed to help the Red Devils trim their squad and raise funds for a new midfielder. But with this serious injury, the situation has become far more complicated, and United may now be forced to keep Ugarte while looking for other ways to strengthen their midfield and finance their transfer window.
