Spartak Moscow dreamed of landing a world-class coach… instead, they got two categorical rejections. Both Xavi Hernández and Thiago Motta turned down approaches from the Russian club, which continues to struggle for international appeal.
According to Nicolo Schira, Xavi, free since leaving FC Barcelona in 2024, was contacted in recent days. His response was immediate: no thanks. The former Barça coach has no interest in taking a job in Russia, despite Spartak’s insistence. Same outcome with Thiago Motta: when sounded out, the Italo-Brazilian didn’t even agree to hold talks.
The geopolitical context explains everything
Why the chain of refusals? The context says it all. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russian clubs have been banned from European competitions and live in a state of sporting isolation. For top-level managers, unable to compete in the Champions League or Europa League, such a project instantly loses value and appeal.
The result: Spartak Moscow is still without a big-name coach… and their managerial market has turned into a headache.
