Two fake news stories are circulating at the same time and going viral on social media: banknotes featuring the faces of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Fakes are multiplying. This week, two major fake news stories spread on social networks. The first claims that Portugal is preparing to release a 7euro banknote bearing the likeness of Cristiano Ronaldo.
An ultrarealistic image was even shared to support the rumor. Except it’s completely false: the Banco de Portugal cannot create a banknote on its own, the euro has no 7euro denomination, and European banknotes never depict real people.
Messi, CR7, Maradona on a banknote? Obviously fake.
The second hoax claims that the Central Bank of Argentina is preparing a 100,000peso banknote in tribute to Maradona and Messi ahead of the World Cup. Again, no official announcement, nothing real — just another fabrication taking advantage of the popularity of football stars.
