“It’s thanks to Pep Guardiola”: Cherki’s admission about his transformation at Manchester City

Arriving at Manchester City with the label of an immense talent, Rayan Cherki is confirming that promise and, above all, taking a step up. Decisive in his first months under Pep Guardiola, the 22-year-old French attacking midfielder has already made 15 Premier League appearances and scored 2 goals this season.

Has Rayan Cherki been transformed at City? Many think so, but not him. The former Lyon player insists he hasn’t changed his nature: “Am I a different player compared to Lyon? I don’t think so. In my last year at Lyon, I had an incredible season. I scored a lot of goals and provided a lot of assists, and I was consistent.”

Becoming a more complete player under Guardiola

For Cherki, the evolution lies elsewhere. “I think I’ve improved in intensity and in the volume of my game—that’s where people expected me to progress the most,” he explains, aware that his technical qualities have always been recognized. “All my qualities are constantly mentioned. But where I think I’ve progressed the most is in my work rate and the tactical details,” he adds, highlighting the importance of his environment: “It’s also thanks to Pep and the English league.”

This progress also comes through constant personal commitment. The Frenchman does not hide the sacrifices he makes every day: “I work a lot outside training, so I have very little time for myself. It’s a lot of time in the gym, in recovery, and resting. It’s a lot of sacrifice.” At 22, Rayan Cherki seems to be turning not only into a talented player, but into a complete one, capable of meeting the demands of the very highest level.
