This Saturday in France, Toulouse booked their place in the Coupe de France round of 16 by eliminating Angers (1-1, 6-5 on penalties). But beyond the result, it was a rather surreal scene that marked the match, with referee Marc Bollengier in the spotlight.
Just before the penalty shootout, the official carried out the traditional coin toss to decide which goal would be used. He explained to both captains: blue to his left, yellow to his right. The coin was tossed and clearly landed on the blue side, visible on screen.
A Confusing Coin Toss Before the Shootout
There was a brief moment of hesitation: Mr. Bollengier looked at the coin, handled it, seemed to doubt, then finally validated blue. But, against all expectations, he then sent the players to take their kicks at the goal corresponding to the yellow color.
Total surprise on the Angers side, especially for Haris Belkebla, who looked very confused by the situation. When the Angers captain tried to point out the mistake, the referee would not budge: “No, I said over there.”
To make matters worse, the shootout did not go Angers’ way, and they were eliminated. The sequence is already making the rounds on social media and is likely to be remembered—for all the wrong reasons.
