PSG will once again have to go through the playoff round. Held to a 1–1 draw by Newcastle, the Parisians finish the league phase in a disappointing 11th place, far from their Top 8 objective.

PSG are heading to the playoffs. It will not necessarily be insurmountable, but it is a bitter pill to swallow for Paris, who had always been in the Top 8 this season in the Champions League. Luis Enrique tried to put things into perspective, convinced that his team deserved better.

“We missed a penalty, we had a lot of chances… we deserved to win,” insisted the Spanish coach, who prefers to see this scenario as a full-scale rehearsal for what lies ahead. True to his message, he embraces it: “I like the challenge.”

“We know the playoffs. It will be difficult because it’s the Champions League, but we’ll be ready,” the Spanish technician promised on Canal+. In the dressing room, the same mix of frustration and clear-headedness prevailed, with Safonov playing it down by saying that “that’s football,” while Vitinha did not hide his bitterness: “We controlled the match, we had too many chances… and we didn’t win.”

As a result, PSG will play for their European survival in the playoffs, with Monaco or Qarabag on their path. A dangerous and stressful detour, but one that has almost become a habit. In Paris, the real Champions League starts now.
