Real Madrid will have to wait. Suffering from a left knee injury since December, Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out of the second leg of the 2025–2026 Champions League playoff against Benfica this Wednesday.

Arbeloa provided an update on Mbappé’s condition. It is a major absence, decided in consultation with the medical staff and the Madrid coach. Speaking at a press conference on Movistar+, Alvaro Arbeloa revealed the reasoning behind the decision.

Real Madrid Prioritize Mbappé’s Full Recovery

“It’s a decision we made together. It’s primarily based on how he feels. We discussed it between him and me, along with the doctors. We believe the best thing is for him to stop, recover, and come back at 100%,” Arbeloa explained. The message is clear: there is no intention of taking any risks with the French forward.

As for the length of his absence, the Madrid coach remained cautious. “How long will he be out? We’ll see, I can’t say at the moment. It won’t be a matter of days; it will be a bit longer. But I can’t specify how long. We hope it won’t be too long.” In other words, Mbappé will not be returning anytime soon. A significant blow for Real Madrid, even if the priority is now crystal clear: a full recovery, without rushing the process.
