Two months after a completely chaotic final won on the pitch by Senegal, CAF has ultimately awarded the victory to Morocco by default (3-0). This explosive decision has reignited the controversy and sent shockwaves across Africa.
On January 18, the AFCON 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal had already descended into chaos. After a penalty was awarded to Morocco in stoppage time, Senegalese players left the pitch for several minutes before returning. Ultimately, Édouard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz’s attempt, and Pape Gueye secured a 1-0 victory for Senegal. A surreal scenario that seemed settled, especially since CAF had initially imposed no sanctions on the Lions of Teranga.
CAF overturns final result and sparks major controversy
In a dramatic twist this Tuesday, following an appeal by the Moroccan federation, CAF’s appeals jury completely reversed the outcome of the final. Citing articles 82 and 84 of its regulations, the governing body declared Senegal to have forfeited the match.
The direct consequence: a 3-0 default victory for Morocco, which officially regains the AFCON 2025 trophy. This reversal immediately triggered a wave of confusion and anger. In many African countries, the decision is considered excessive, even incomprehensible, for incidents that occurred at the end of the match.
Senegal responded immediately. In an official statement, the Senegalese Football Federation denounced the ruling as “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable,” arguing that the team’s behavior did not justify such a sanction. The FSF also disputes CAF’s interpretation of the rules and warns of damaging consequences for Senegalese football. The case is far from over, as Senegal has announced it will take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne in an attempt to overturn the decision, opening a new legal saga around an already historic—and now highly controversial—AFCON 2025.
