France Squad: The Incredible List of Absentees

Didier Deschamps has made his decision… and unsurprisingly, the list of players left out is already causing huge debate. Between injuries, declining form, tough decisions and fierce competition, several regular members of the French national team will ultimately watch the 2026 World Cup from their couches.

Didier Deschamps’ final campaign is clearly one built on strong choices. While the France coach had sometimes handed out favors in previous selections, this time he showed no mercy. No special treatment. The best players made the squad, and the others only have themselves to blame.

Major Stars Left Out of France Squad

Behind the 26 selected players, several experienced internationals saw their World Cup dreams collapse in recent weeks. Some had been established figures for years, while others had recently returned to top form… but none survived the final decisions made by the France manager.

In goal, Lucas Chevalier paid a heavy price for his difficult season. Long viewed as the future of Les Bleus, the PSG goalkeeper lost significant ground after being demoted at club level. Deschamps had still left the door slightly open for him in March, but Robin Risser, outstanding with Lens this season, eventually moved ahead of him permanently.

In defense, a major era comes to an end for Benjamin Pavard. Present at the last four major international tournaments, the French defender has suddenly disappeared from the squad after what was considered an average season. Pierre Kalulu, Loïc Badé and Castello Lukeba were also left out, while Ferland Mendy and Wesley Fofana were once again held back by recurring injuries.

The biggest shock, however, probably concerns Eduardo Camavinga. The Real Madrid midfielder, long tipped as a future leader of the national team, is one of the biggest sacrifices on this list after a nightmare season marked by injuries, poor form and criticism following his red card against Bayern Munich.

Up front, Didier Deschamps showed no mercy either. Randal Kolo Muani, despite a decent European campaign with Tottenham, has completely fallen out of the coach’s attacking plans. Florian Thauvin, excellent with Lens, and Estéban Lepaul, Ligue 1’s top scorer with 20 goals, were also rejected in an attack overflowing with competition. As for Hugo Ekitiké, injured, he still hoped to snatch a place until the very end.
