After Albirroja’s historic qualification for the World Cup round of 16, secured against Germany on penalties (1-1, 4-3 on pens), the whole of Paraguay can celebrate. President Santiago Peña has declared this Tuesday, June 30, a public holiday across the entire country.
Paraguay is in jubilation. The announcement was made by the head of state in a statement published on social media. It is a powerful gesture to celebrate a victory that goes far beyond sport, as it has awakened national pride.
Paraguay Celebrates a Historic World Cup Victory
“Today, an entire country celebrates. It celebrates the victory of a team that embodies the deepest part of our identity: fighting spirit, faith and the strength of a people that never gives up. Thank you, Albirroja, for giving us this immense joy and for uniting millions of Paraguayans once again under the same flag,” Santiago Peña declared.
This qualification against the Nationalmannschaft will go down as one of the great moments of this World Cup. Paraguay continues its dream, while Germany once again exits the competition through the back door.
The funniest part is that Germany now seems to be making South America very happy. Four days earlier, Ecuador’s president had also declared a public holiday after Ecuador’s 2-1 victory over the Germans. At this rate, the Mannschaft could well become South Americans’ favorite team.
