Paris Saint-Germain could be preparing a major surprise in the goalkeeper position. While Matvey Safonov and Lucas Chevalier seemed set to battle for an important place in the Paris hierarchy, a new name has now shaken everything up: Diogo Costa.
The FC Porto goalkeeper, already regarded as one of the best European specialists in his position, is once again being strongly linked with PSG. And his big performance for Portugal against Croatia has obviously only strengthened the interest surrounding his profile.
PSG contacts reportedly advancing for Diogo Costa
According to Gary De Jesus, a specialist in Portuguese football, this case would be far more serious than just a simple rumour. PSG have reportedly already made progress in their contacts with the Portuguese international. “Diogo Costa, you may see him soon. There are advanced contacts with Paris Saint-Germain. He extended his contract last December with Porto to lower his release clause. It has now dropped to 60 million euros,” he explained.
Under contract with FC Porto until 2030, Diogo Costa will obviously not be an easy deal to complete. Porto are not known for selling their best players cheaply, especially when it comes to someone as important as their starting goalkeeper. But the situation is clear: Diogo Costa’s release clause is now reportedly set at 60 million euros, a very high fee for a goalkeeper, but not out of reach for a PSG side that has already shown in the past it can strike hard when a profile is considered a priority.
On paper, Diogo Costa ticks many boxes. A Portugal international, experienced in the Champions League, strong on his line and capable of delivering in major matches, he represents a very high-level profile for a club that wants to continue dominating in Europe. His arrival would, however, raise a huge internal question. What would PSG do with Matvey Safonov? And above all with Lucas Chevalier, who has been presented as an important part of the Paris project? A Diogo Costa signing would completely reshuffle the cards in goal. The case will now depend on the will of Luis Enrique and the Paris management, but if PSG really decide to go all the way, Diogo Costa could become one of the major sagas of the summer.
