The relationship between John Textor and Jean-Michel Aulas has never been a calm one. Owner of Olympique Lyonnais since December 2022, the American revisited the tensions with his predecessor, particularly after the DNCG episode, speaking on RMC without sparing the former president.
“I think I made a mistake buying something from Jean-Michel Aulas. He did not want to sell. He was forced to do so. The club was no longer solvent,” Textor said, believing he inherited a critical financial situation.
Ongoing tensions after the sale of OL
According to him, Aulas maintained a harmful influence even after the sale: “He gives you control, but then he goes on television and says he has no intention of listening to you. In the end, he puts you in a position where you have to replace him.”
The American claims he had to act quickly to save the club: “Since June 30, 2025, all the changes you see, the reduction of the wage bill, the reduction of expenses, making the club financially viable… all of that has been done. The club was insolvent. After 36 years of his presidency, the club could no longer stand on its own two feet.”
Textor also clarified his current role, stressing that he no longer takes part in day-to-day management. “Michele Kang is president of OL. (…) I am not ‘the boss.’ I am not making any decisions at all right now. She is the one running Lyon,” he said, praising the positive impact of his successor as the club now seeks financial stability while remaining competitive on the field.
