OM have avoided the worst. Threatened with exclusion from European competitions, the Marseille club has ultimately been kept in the Europa League by UEFA. The decision comes as a relief to directors and supporters, even though the punishment remains severe with a €10 million fine.
OM can breathe again. The transfer window will be able to go ahead almost freely. However, one point in the statement raised doubts: UEFA also imposed a “restriction on the ability to register new players” for the 2026-2027 season. Enough to worry fans ahead of this transfer window.
Marseille Still Allowed to Strengthen Its Squad
In reality, OM will indeed be able to sign players and register their new arrivals for the Europa League. The measure is not a transfer ban, but a financial framework. The cost of new players registered on the UEFA list must not exceed that of the players leaving the squad.
In other words, Marseille will have to balance arrivals and departures, especially in terms of the wage bill. Signings are allowed, but the club will not be able to significantly increase the overall cost of its squad entered in European competition.
UEFA is also keeping significant pressure on the club. If OM fail to meet the financial targets set over the coming months, they could face exclusion from a future European competition during the next three seasons. Overall, the verdict is rather favorable for Marseille: OM remain in the Europa League and keep some room to maneuver in the transfer market, albeit under close supervision.
