Lens Brought Back to Earth by Marseille, PSG Rub Their Hands

RC Lens’s 3-1 defeat away to Olympique de Marseille on Saturday confirms a worrying trend: the Sang et Or are struggling badly against Ligue 1’s heavyweights. Of the four defeats suffered by the current second-placed side, three have come against the other members of the top four — in just four meetings.

The glass ceiling against the big guns is becoming clear. Before losing at the Vélodrome, Lens had already fallen to PSG (2-0) and Lyon (1-0). The only other defeat came at Metz (2-0), the bottom club. Against the elite, the record is thin: just one win, in the first-leg meeting with Marseille (2-1).

PSG Benefit from Marseille’s Win

On Saturday, for the 19th-round clash, Marseille delivered an authoritative performance, dominating Lens in every area to claim a deserved 3-1 victory. The result suits PSG perfectly: after winning in Auxerre the day before (1-0), the Parisians take back top spot after watching Lens string together a long run of wins.

Nothing is decided, though. Lens have been checked but remain a serious contender capable of bouncing back. Marseille, seven points behind, are showing a very promising momentum and continue to strengthen during the winter transfer window.

Now all eyes turn to February 8 and the Classico at the Parc des Princes, just after the transfer window closes. A fiery, season-defining appointment already heavy with symbolism, for which the Collectif Ultras Paris have even called for Marseille supporters to be present. The title race is on, and the tension is only rising.
