For the past few hours, an image showing an alleged Portuguese 7euro banknote bearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s likeness has been circulating widely on X. But not so fast.
Beware of fakes. Yet another one has gone viral on the social network X. The rumor claims that the Banco de Portugal is preparing this special note ahead of the 2026 World Cup to pay tribute to the player. And it’s easy to be fooled, as the banknote looks quite realistic.
But it is, of course, false. The Banco de Portugal cannot issue a banknote on its own: only the European Central Bank decides on denominations and their design. The euro has only seven official denominations, and a 7euro note is impossible.
No CR7 note, it’s a fake
Moreover, European banknotes never feature real personalities, only fictional architectural designs. The only nationally authorized initiatives concern commemorative 2euro coins. So no CR7 banknote is planned… much to the dismay of his fans.
