Habib Beye’s debut on the Marseille bench ended abruptly. Olympique de Marseille suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Brest at Stade Francis-Le Blé on Matchday 23 of Ligue 1.
Overwhelmed by Brest’s intensity, the visitors quickly conceded from two crosses delivered by Magnetti and headed home by Ajorque (10th, 29th minutes). Struggling badly in duels and on second balls, OM nearly faced a heavier scoreline before halftime, with Ajorque striking the crossbar.
Brest’s Intensity and Missed Chances Seal Marseille’s Defeat
After the break, Aubameyang’s introduction brought more attacking presence, but it was not enough to turn the tide. More proactive in the second half, the Phocéens were denied repeatedly by an outstanding Coudert, who notably saved a penalty from Greenwood and produced several decisive stops. Despite a more energetic display after halftime, Marseille’s defeat was a logical one, marking a disappointing start for Beye.
Speaking to Ligue 1+, Habib Beye pointed to his team’s lack of intensity. “We were caught out by Brest’s intensity and especially by two clearances in 30 minutes where we lost the second balls. We had identified that we must not defend deep in our box against a player like Ajorque. We conceded from two crosses.” The Senegalese coach also regretted the lack of efficiency after the break: “The penalty could have changed things, it would have been a different momentum. Coudert was excellent. But we need to raise this team’s intensity and tempo, and become more vertical. There’s a slight lack of confidence that we must address during this training camp week.” Marseille will head to Marbella before hosting Lyon on March 1.
Clearly frustrated, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg called for a swift response. “By conceding two goals in 20 minutes, we ruined the match ourselves. We shouldn’t talk too much, we need to work hard and take responsibility. What we are doing right now is not good enough. We had chances but couldn’t convert them. There’s no need for too much talk.” Marseille’s next appointment is the home clash against Lyon on March 1, as they attempt to revive their stalled momentum.
