Marc Cucurella has revealed a surreal moment after Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph over PSG (3-0) on July 13. The Spanish defender says the memory still haunts him.
Speaking to Gerard Romero, Cucurella recalled what happened on the podium during the trophy ceremony, where Donald Trump unexpectedly joined the celebrations alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
“We were told we couldn’t lift the trophy until he left. But he stayed and said, ‘Lift the trophy, I’m staying right here!’ No one dared to say anything… I was terrified,” Cucurella admitted.
Trump takes center stage
Cucurella isn’t the only one to have felt uncomfortable. Teammates Reece James and Cole Palmer had already spoken about Trump’s overbearing presence on stage. The moment, meant to be solemn and celebratory, turned surreal—as the former U.S. president hijacked the spotlight and unsettled the players.
A trophy lifted under pressure. A Hollywood ending… with a dose of tension.
