Habib Beye could already be heading for the exit at Olympique de Marseille. Despite securing fifth place in dramatic fashion on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, the Franco-Senegalese coach failed to achieve the club’s main objective: qualification for the Champions League.
Habib Beye may claim that OM “achieved their objective” by qualifying for the Europa League, but in Marseille, that argument clearly is not convincing many people.
Genesio Already in Talks With Marseille
Appointed last February following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi, Beye endured extremely tense months in charge of the club. Between internal tensions, inconsistent results, and a dressing room that was reportedly difficult to manage, the former pundit even had to play the role of psychologist, according to people close to him, in order to keep the squad focused under pressure.
Despite those difficult circumstances, Marseille’s management is already preparing for life after Beye. According to L’Équipe, future OM president Stéphane Richard recently held talks with Bruno Genesio. More importantly, the current Lille coach is reportedly not indifferent to Marseille’s interest.
Although Lille secured direct qualification for next season’s Champions League thanks to a third-place finish, Genesio could still leave the club freely this summer. The French manager met with president Olivier Létang on Monday morning but did not rule out a departure.
“We’ll see, everything is possible,” he said after the defeat against Auxerre. The major problem for Marseille remains financial resources. Discussions regarding the sporting project and especially the transfer budget are said to have seriously cooled Bruno Genesio’s interest. Behind the scenes, many are beginning to understand that Frank McCourt does not intend to spend heavily this summer — bad news that could severely damage Marseille’s ambitions and push Genesio away.
