European football could be heading toward a historic turning point. According to reports from the Daily Mail, confirmed by the BBC, Pep Guardiola has decided to leave Manchester City at the end of the season. After nearly ten years on the Citizens’ bench, the Spanish manager is already preparing his farewell.
This time, it seems certain. Guardiola is leaving Manchester City, a departure that had already been rumored for several months, or even years.
Manchester City Already Preparing for Life After Guardiola
According to English media outlets, Manchester City’s executives have already started informing some sponsors about Guardiola’s imminent exit. An official announcement could even arrive as early as Sunday after the final Premier League match against Aston Villa.
Behind the scenes, Manchester City are already working on the succession plan for the man who completely transformed the club since arriving in 2016. Two names are reportedly standing out: Enzo Maresca, currently without a club since leaving Chelsea in January, and especially Vincent Kompany, who is now managing Bayern Munich.
Former iconic City captain Kompany represents a particularly exciting option for Manchester City supporters. His profile is highly appreciated internally, although convincing Bayern Munich to part ways with the former Belgian defender could prove extremely difficult. After winning multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and most importantly the Champions League under Guardiola, the end of the Catalan coach’s era would mark the conclusion of a truly historic cycle for Manchester City.
