Already under scrutiny, Álvaro Arbeloa has nevertheless made a convincing start on the Real Madrid bench. Hired two weeks ago to replace Xabi Alonso, he has delivered three wins in four matches and seems to have breathed new life into the locker room.
But not everyone is celebrating. Andrei Arshavin, a former Arsenal player and an outspoken Barcelona fan, made a very blunt statement on Match TV, saying he simply hopes the former right-back will crash and burn.
Arshavin openly hopes for Real Madrid’s downfall
“As a Barcelona supporter, I hope Arbeloa fails,” he said. “I’m surprised Barcelona are only one point ahead of them in the standings. Real Madrid were playing so badly that I thought their position would be different.”
He added that Arbeloa is still in a delicate situation and that, for him, the priority is to build relationships with the players rather than draw up tactics, something Xabi Alonso failed to do. The message is clear: even when Real win, their rivals are already hoping for their downfall.
