A chill has swept over Kylian Mbappé. The Real Madrid superstar now faces a painful decision: undergo knee surgery and write off the rest of the season… or grit his teeth and hope to hold on until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Already sidelined for several weeks, the captain of the French national team was in Paris in recent days for additional medical tests. Behind the scenes, concern is growing. His knee injury may be far more serious than initially expected.
A Surgery That Could Change Everything
Speaking to the daily newspaper Sport, knee specialist Pablo Gelber did little to reassure about the possibility of surgery.
According to the surgeon, operating now would be an extremely risky gamble for the rest of Mbappé’s career. “It’s a swampy situation. If you operate on a ligament, there’s no procedure that allows a player to return in time to play in a World Cup just a few months later,” he explained.
Even worse, such an operation could immediately end the French striker’s season. And even then, nothing would guarantee a return to the same level. “Coming back at exactly the same level in that timeframe is very, very difficult. He might not fully recover,” the specialist warned.
