Kylian Mbappé left a major mark at PSG with 256 goals and established himself as captain of the French national team, yet he never obtained the captain’s armband in Paris. According to French Consultant Julien Cazarre, he nevertheless tried to secure that role.
On the Colinterview podcast, the comedian looks back at the 2023/2024 season, marked by the arrival of Luis Enrique and an internal vote to appoint the PSG captain. The armband ultimately stayed with Marquinhos, a decision that Mbappé reportedly took badly.
Criticism of Mbappé’s Leadership and Public Image
“Mbappé struggles to show anything natural in his empathy. The Brahim Diaz episode says everything about him: a guy who is off on a human level. He tries to do everything like someone who fully controls his communication, but the problem is that you need a minimum of sincerity in football to like someone. He posts a tweet on the side, at the very moment when Griezmann fades into total anonymity because he asked for the armband the way Mbappé did at PSG. He wanted Marquinhos pushed out, but he didn’t get it.”
Cazarre also criticizes the striker’s image and communication style, which he considers too calculated and not natural enough. In his view, Mbappé overdoes the control of his public persona. “He’s out of touch. Who says, ‘If I tied my future to the Champions League, I’d be very far from PSG, no disrespect’? You don’t even realize anymore how off you sound on a human level”.
“He’s condemned to score huge numbers of goals because people won’t like him for anything else — he creates nothing else, even though he has everything needed. All you remember are his goals. Mbappé is made to believe he understands everything. He controls his communication and his character too much — it’s over the top. And the Brahim Diaz situation is the perfect example of someone with no empathy. What normal person thinks that doing that is a proper tribute?”
