A dramatic turn of events in Marseille: with the now-confirmed departure of Mehdi Benatia, Olympique de Marseille is already working to find his successor… and the potential candidates are surprising.
After De Zerbi and Longoria, Mehdi Benatia will not stay either. OM will have a new sporting director next season. The club’s owner, Frank McCourt, personally confirmed the situation: “He will stay until the end of the season. After that, it will be over.” A clear decision that marks the end of Benatia’s tenure at the conclusion of the current campaign.
Club legends considered for key role
In detail, McCourt explained the context of this departure: “After receiving his resignation, I personally asked him to extend his notice period, and I thank him for accepting, as it was essential to finish the season. Mehdi is an excellent sporting director. It was his wish, and that is what we agreed upon.”
In this context, two well-known figures among Marseille fans are emerging, according to journalist Adrien Pittore: Dimitri Payet and Steve Mandanda. Two iconic club legends whose names are reportedly gaining traction internally.
Initial contacts have already been made with both former OM leaders. Even more, each of them is said to have clauses or agreements allowing for a potential transition into a role within the club, particularly for this strategic position.
If these leads are confirmed, OM would be betting on an in-house profile to take on the sporting director role. A decision that would align with a return to the club’s identity, relying on respected figures from the dressing room who are closely connected to the Marseille environment. It remains to be seen whether management will take the plunge with one of these two names… or if a more experienced executive option will ultimately prevail.
