A huge slap in the face for Real Madrid. On Wednesday night, Los Blancos collapsed on the pitch of Benfica Lisbonne, losing 4–2 at the Estádio da Luz on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage. A defeat with serious consequences: Real Madrid finished ninth, outside the top eight, and will have to go through the playoffs. A scenario that made Kylian Mbappé explode.

Speaking in the mixed zone, the Madrid number 10 did not mince his words. For him, the issue is neither tactical nor technical, but mental. A lack of desire, no consistency, and an attitude unworthy of title contenders: Mbappé pointed to a team incapable of playing with a knife between its teeth when their European survival was on the line.

A brutal verdict on the team’s mentality

Clearly irritated, the French striker insisted on avoiding any excuses. The defeat was deserved, Benfica were better, and having to go through the playoffs “hurts.” Even more serious in his eyes were the third and fourth goals conceded, described as “shameful.” A harsh assessment, especially given that Real had been coming off a run of convincing performances.
