Thomas Tuchel has won his battle. Just days after publicly criticizing the protocol arrangements at the 2026 World Cup, the England manager has seen FIFA respond positively to his request.
Tuchel came out on top in his standoff with FIFA. During the Three Lions’ opening match of the tournament, the former PSG coach expressed his frustration during the national anthems. Positioned behind dozens of photographers, Tuchel explained that he was unable to see his players during a moment he had been eagerly anticipating since taking charge of England.
FIFA Changes Anthem Ceremony Setup
“I couldn’t see a single player,” he lamented during a press conference, arguing that the large number of photographers had spoiled what he considered to be a highly emotional and important experience.
FIFA reacted quickly. According to several reports, world football’s governing body has decided to modify its pre-match ceremony setup. From now on, photographers will no longer be positioned directly in front of national team coaches and their staff during the anthems.
It is a small victory for Thomas Tuchel, but one that could improve the experience for all managers at the World Cup. The German coach has shown that he can make his voice heard off the pitch as well, with FIFA ultimately choosing to revise its organization.
