Nico Williams has officially extended his contract with Athletic Club until 2035, delivering a heavy blow to Barcelona’s summer transfer plans.
Tipped to join the Catalan giants in this window, the 22-year-old winger made a stunning U-turn, opting to stay in Bilbao. “This is my home. I’m where I want to be, with my people,” Williams said in a heartfelt video released by the club.
As part of the renewal, his release clause has reportedly increased from €58 million to nearly €90 million — a massive win for Athletic and a strong message to Barça and the rest of Europe.
That said, the story might not be over. Should Barcelona find the funds to trigger the new clause next summer, a move could still happen — but for now, it’s mission failed for the Blaugrana.
