Steven Gerrard could be heading back to Ibrox. According to the Daily Mail, the 44-year-old Englishman is the leading candidate to become the next head coach of Rangers, following the departure of interim manager Barry Ferguson.
Gerrard, who famously ended Celtic’s domestic dominance with a league title in 2021, left Rangers for Aston Villa but has been without a club since his recent stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq. His legacy at Rangers and familiarity with the club’s culture make him the top pick for the role under the club’s new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell.
Ancelotti Jr. on standby
However, Gerrard isn’t the only candidate. Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti and assistant with Real Madrid, is also on the shortlist. So is Southampton boss Russell Martin. While Gerrard remains the frontrunner, the club plans to make a final decision before preseason begins on June 23 — with an announcement potentially coming this week.
Rangers fans could be set for a dramatic reunion — unless a rising name like Ancelotti Jr. steals the spotlight.
