An earthquake — but an expected one — at Barça. Joan Laporta and part of FC Barcelona’s leadership have announced their resignation, a decision that may seem surprising but actually follows the club’s official procedure ahead of the presidential election scheduled for March 15.

It may sound strange, but that’s how it works. The FC Barcelona president resigned as required by club regulations. Joan Laporta is not abandoning ship — on the contrary, he is preparing his re-election bid. The club’s statutes require the president to step down if he wants to run again.

Resignation Required to Run in the Next Election

He therefore resigned in order to campaign and seek a new mandate. Several board members have done the same to enter the race. An interim leadership team will remain in place until the end of the term in June, with a new internal structure. “In accordance with article 42.f of the FC Barcelona statutes, president Joan Laporta has resigned from his duties in order to stand in the board elections to be held on March 15. This resignation was made official during the ordinary board meeting held on Monday, at which the election call was formally published. In addition to Joan Laporta, several current board members also resigned their positions to take part in the electoral process”, the statement reads.

“Specifically, institutional vice-president Elena Fort, social vice-president Antonio Escudero, and board members Ferran Olivé, Josep Maria Albert, Javier Barbany, Miquel Camps, Aureli Mas, Javier Puig and Joan Soler y Ferré submitted their resignations. Once these resignations were formalized, the board will continue to perform its duties until the end of the term on June 30, with a new configuration. Until then, the Club’s highest governing body will be composed of Rafael Yuste as president, Josep Cubells as vice-president and secretary, Alfons Castro as treasurer, and board members Josep Ignasi Macià, Àngel Riudalbas, Joan Solé i Sust and Sisco Pujol. Once formalized, the new board continued the meeting according to the established agenda,” the statement concludes.
