Now based in Dubai as goalkeeping coach at Al-Wasl FC, Rémy Vercoutre is experiencing an extraordinary situation. The former Olympique Lyonnais and SM Caen goalkeeper is having to cope with an extremely tense regional climate, marked by Iranian strikes in response to the American-Israeli offensive against Iran.
Speaking to Ouest-France, Rémy Vercoutre described his difficult days since the conflict erupted last weekend. He first reassured everyone: “I’m fine.” But caution has become part of his daily routine. “Safe? I’m going to leave you quickly once we’re done with this interview to head down to the underground parking lot,” he said, referring to the missiles intercepted overnight and the tremors felt as far as Dubai.

To limit the risks, Vercoutre systematically takes shelter in the basement of his building. “I prefer to be underground, at least three levels down. Even if it’s not very comfortable, I feel safer there than in my apartment, where there’s glass everywhere. If it were to explode, I think I would be exposed.”

Despite everything, he is keeping a cool head. “We’re being cautious, we’re careful. It’s not very reassuring, even though this isn’t officially a war zone here. The Emirati army is doing its job intercepting missiles. Sometimes it hits — it’s impressive.”
