Outstanding against OM despite Olympique Lyonnais’ 2-3 defeat, Corentin Tolisso continues to deliver top-level performances. At 31, the midfielder appears to have rediscovered his very best form — the one that propelled him to Bayern Munich in 2017.
Can Didier Deschamps still ignore him? Corentin Tolisso is back at the highest level, the one he reached in 2017 and 2018 when he was one of the pillars of the French national team. For Samuel Umtiti, the debate should not even exist anymore. Speaking on RMC, the former defender clearly advocated for Tolisso’s return to the France national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Tolisso’s Strong Case for a France Recall
“He’s a complete player. He helps this Lyon side so much that I keep questioning the debate we’ve had for weeks about selecting Corentin. His current level reminds me of the Corentin Tolisso I knew during his peak years at Lyon before he left for Bayern. He can play in a two-man midfield, higher up the pitch, make forward runs, or stay in front of the defense — even though I think he prefers to push forward. For a team, for a World Cup, you can use him anywhere,” Umtiti explained.
Versatile, experienced, and in form, his profile ticks many boxes. One major obstacle remains: Didier Deschamps, who for now does not plan to recall the Lyon captain. But if Tolisso maintains this level, the question will soon become pressing: does Deschamps really have a choice? After N’Golo Kanté, will “DD” take a chance on Tolisso? The answer will come in the next few weeks.
