Neymar delivered a strong performance in Santos’ 2-0 victory over Remo, providing an assist and contributing to the second goal, as he eyes a return to the national team for the World Cup. However, the end of the match turned tense following an altercation with an opponent, resulting in a yellow card that rules him out of the next game against Flamengo.

The Brazilian star now finds himself at the center of a major controversy in Brazil. Comments he made after the match have sparked widespread criticism and backlash.

Controversial remarks spark backlash

After the game, Neymar strongly criticized the refereeing: “This card is unfair. I was on the receiving end of a dangerous tackle late in the match, unnecessarily. It wasn’t the first, but the third or fourth. I went to protest and got a yellow card.”

The controversy escalated with the rest of his statement: “Sávio is like that, he woke up like Chico… He wants to be the star of the match, he shows a complete lack of respect for the players.”

This expression was widely perceived as misogynistic, triggering strong reactions and reigniting debate over sexist language in football. The phrase originates from Portuguese and means “pig.” The term “chiqueiro” also refers to a time when menstruation was often associated with dirtiness. Being “de chico” thus implied being unclean, as explained by CNN Brazil.
