Didier Deschamps has not yet left the France bench, but the question of his succession is already coming back with insistence. After Les Bleus qualified against Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, Thierry Henry paid a strong tribute to the French head coach.
No one is a prophet in their own country. And for Didier Deschamps, that saying fits perfectly. Thierry Henry has warned that DD will be missed by Les Bleus.
Henry warns about the post-Deschamps era
Working as a consultant for Fox during the World Cup, the former France striker praised Didier Deschamps’ work, with the coach once again guiding his team into the last four of a major tournament. While Zinedine Zidane is regularly presented as the big favourite to take over, Henry stressed just how difficult it will be to follow in Deschamps’ footsteps.
“He will be very difficult to replace for us,” said the 1998 world champion. It was a simple sentence, but one loaded with meaning, at a time when the future of the France bench is gradually taking shape. Henry also defended Deschamps’ record, which is sometimes reduced to luck or favourable circumstances. “We often heard that he was lucky. No, no! It has nothing to do with luck. The reward is in the risk. He has often taken risks, but calculated ones. Because he is far from stupid. Trust me, he has a great brain,” the former Arsenal player explained.
Since taking charge of Les Bleus, Didier Deschamps has kept France at the top of world football with remarkable consistency: a World Cup title, a World Cup final, deep runs in major competitions and now another semi-final. His legacy will be immense. For his successor, whoever it may be, the bar will therefore be set very high. And through Thierry Henry’s words, the full weight of the post-Deschamps era is already becoming clear.
