Olympique de Marseille is stirring behind the scenes but has already suffered a first setback in its search for a new sporting director. According to Foot Mercato, the club has just been turned down.
Amid a major restructuring following the arrival of Stéphane Richard as president and the expected departure of Medhi Benatia at the end of the season, OM is exploring multiple options to strengthen its organization. Several names have been mentioned, such as Julien Fournier and Cristiano Giuntoli, but not all negotiations are progressing at the same pace.
A significant setback in Marseille’s plans
The latest blow concerns George Syrianos. The Nottingham Forest sporting director, regarded as a modern and highly rated profile in Europe, has simply refused Marseille despite several discussions.
According to Foot Mercato, this refusal is partly due to a lack of clarity regarding the club’s financial situation and concerns about his future room for maneuver. It is a real embarrassment for OM, already under pressure on the sporting front in the race for European qualification. Both internally and on the pitch, the rebuilding process on the Canebière still looks set to be a long one.
