The Girondins de Bordeaux have been hit by another earthquake. Already weakened both sporting and financially for several seasons, the Bordeaux club was heavily sanctioned on Tuesday, June 30, by the DNCG, the financial watchdog of French football. The commission decided to exclude FCGB from all national competitions for the 2026-2027 season.
It is the worst-case scenario for the Girondins de Bordeaux. In a statement released after its hearing, the club confirmed the decision: “Following its hearing before the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG), FC Girondins de Bordeaux has taken note of the decision handed down this Tuesday, June 30, by the commission, which decided to exclude the club from all national competitions for the 2026-2027 season.”
Bordeaux Will Appeal the DNCG Decision
This sanction represents a major threat to the future of the Girondins, currently playing in the fourth division. After years of crisis, relegations and economic difficulties, Bordeaux once again finds itself with its back against the wall. However, the club does not intend to stop there and will try to save its place through an appeal.
The Girondins have announced their intention to contest the decision within the regulatory deadlines. “The club intends to appeal this decision within the timeframe provided by the regulations,” the statement said. This step is now crucial to avoid another historic fall. The appeal should allow FCGB to gain time to strengthen its financial case and present updated elements before the appeal commission, with a new hearing expected in around fifteen days.
Behind the scenes, Bordeaux remains engaged in discussions over a takeover by the British fund Sparta Capital. This issue has become central, as the financial guarantees expected by the DNCG will directly determine the club’s sporting future. Bordeaux reportedly needed around €9 million to complete the current season and secure the next one. Everything will now be decided before the appeal commission: if the club presents the required guarantees, it can still hope to avoid definitive exclusion from national competitions. Otherwise, the Girondins face one of the darkest chapters in their recent history.
