A minor clash between Rayan Cherki and Lucas Digne added some tension to France’s 3-1 victory over Colombia, though it ultimately had no consequences.
During the first half, the two players briefly argued over a free kick just outside the penalty area. Digne eventually took the shot, but failed to convert. It was a quick exchange in an intense match, soon forgotten. Speaking after the game, Didier Deschamps immediately played down any controversy.
A brief on-field disagreement quickly dismissed
“It’s not related to that. It wasn’t about their situations. It was linked to certain actions (from the Colombians). The Cherki/Digne exchange over the free kick? If you’re looking for something to dwell on, take that—it’s a non-event. Ten seconds later, we moved on,” said Didier Deschamps.
One of the players involved, Rayan Cherki, also confirmed that everything was fine: “There were no specific instructions. During the warm-up, I took one and placed it beautifully. Of course I wanted to take it. I’ll get my turn next time, it’s not a problem. Are we friends? Of course. He’ll be coming to play against us soon (during Manchester City vs Aston Villa in the Premier League), we’ll take care of him, don’t worry,” he joked.
