Cherki’s World Cup Chances: “Not Happening” Says ex-France Coach

Raymond Domenech didn’t mince his words when evaluating Rayan Cherki’s chances of making France’s World Cup squad. According to the former national team coach, the attacking midfielder is far — very far — down the hierarchy.

Cherki, the new Hatem Ben Arfa? For Domenech, there’s no debate: Cherki won’t be going to the World Cup with Les Bleus. “He has no chance. Akliouche, Olise, and Nkunku are ahead of him. A spot in the squad? I don’t believe it for a second!” he said on La Chaîne L’Équipe. A ruthless verdict that puts a real chill on the Lyon product’s ambitions.

On RMC, Jérôme Rothen echoed the criticism. He believes Cherki “missed his chance in an important match” and slammed him for falling back into flashy, unnecessary moves he had eliminated at City under Guardiola. According to Rothen, Cherki is showing a lack of respect for the France shirt and an “attitude that isn’t flawless.”

“Just the first half — 45 minutes — was enough for me. You’re wearing the France shirt, it’s an important match… All the unnecessary dribbling he’d cleaned up at Lyon and City, he brings it back. Why? Because he doesn’t respect the shirt enough? I have doubts about his mindset, his effort, and all those useless gestures,” Rothen insisted.

“He burned a joker”

Subbed off in the 68th minute, Cherki, according to Rothen, “made a mockery of the team. He played to entertain the crowd, not for the collective. If he’s already acting like this after three caps, what happens after 40? He’s burned a joker — maybe permanently with the World Cup coming, because spots are expensive.”

France, already qualified, will face Azerbaijan on Sunday — a crucial chance for Cherki to show a different face. With fierce competition in attack and no major injuries among the regulars, making the squad looks like a long shot for the City playmaker.
