Real Madrid secured their place in the final of the Supercopa de España by defeating Atlético (2-1) this Thursday in Jeddah, and will face FC Barcelona in another Clasico this Sunday. Deprived of Kylian Mbappé, who is still recovering from a left knee injury, the Madrid team delivered another imperfect performance, often saved by an excellent Thibaut Courtois and the lack of realism from their opponents.
The match was not a great spectacle in terms of play, but it was marked by the constant agitation of Diego Simeone on the sidelines. The Argentine coach particularly stood out for his numerous provocations towards Vinicius Junior. During the match, he was caught by cameras telling the Brazilian, in reference to Florentino Pérez and rumors about his future, that the president was going to “fire” him. “Florentino is going to fire you, remember what I’m telling you, Florentino is going to fire you!” he shouted at the Real Madrid player.
Already struggling, Vinicius was unable to make a decisive impact and extended his poor streak with a 16th consecutive match without a goal. At the end of the match, when he was substituted for Arda Güler, he was even booed by part of the crowd. Once again, Simeone took the opportunity to add fuel to the fire, pointing to the stands and telling the player: “Listen, listen!”.
Despite this tense context and an average match performance, Real ensured the essentials by securing qualification. The Madrid team will now meet FC Barcelona for a Clasico in the final, in a duel that promises to be electric.
