The scenario was too cruel not to leave a mark. Defeated by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties (2-2, 1-4 on penalties) this Thursday during the Trophée des Champions, Olympique de Marseille came very close to an achievement. And Roberto De Zerbi could not hold back his emotions, to the point of breaking down in tears in the locker room, overwhelmed by disappointment. This was a first in his career.

In the press conference, the Italian coach recounted this rare moment with great sincerity. “The first thing I told my team is that I have never cried after losing. And today, I cried when I entered the locker room,” he confessed, before adding: “We were preparing in a special way and PSG remains the team that has played the best in Europe for a year and a half. But today, Marseille deserved to win.”

Beyond the frustration, De Zerbi mainly wanted to emphasize the content and performance of his players. “The second thing I told the team is that we must always demand this type of performance from ourselves,” he explained, before detailing what he saw on the field: “Today, there was everything that should be asked for in a football match: the play, the defensive part, the character, the technique… Everything a strong team needs to win, Marseille had.”
