Bruno Fernandes almost left last summer but chose to stay at Manchester United out of loyalty. A decision that now appears to weigh heavily on the Portuguese midfielder.
Bruno Fernandes has clearly not moved on from last summer. Courted by Saudi Arabia, the Manchester United attacking midfielder stayed, but now feels betrayed by the club’s leadership. In a no-holds-barred interview with Canal 11, the Portuguese international settles the score.
A Fractured Relationship with the Board
“The club wanted me to leave. I told the executives, and I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision because the coach wanted me. If I had said I wanted to go, even if the coach wanted me to stay, the club would have let me leave,” Fernandes explained.
“My passion and empathy for the club were the same, but there comes a point where money becomes more important to them than you. I felt that if I left, it wouldn’t have been such a bad thing for them. That hurt me a bit,” said the former Sporting Portugal player.
Despite a massive offer, the United captain, under contract until 2027, chose to stay out of loyalty—a choice that now seems one-sided.
